From a collection found in a skip on Oxmantown Road, this photo reminds me of the memoir Remembering How We Stood by John Ryan. I love the pint of plain and the half pints not to mention the cigarette behind the central figure’s ear. Real Dublin characters.
Three men drinking, Dublin, 1940s or 50s.

I found you while on another blog. I love this blog. My great grandparents were from Ireland. I found them on Ancestory.com. Fitzgerald and Tobin. My grandmother told me a lot of stories about her mother, who died young in childbirth, but I have no pictures. I know my Tobin ancestors were tavern owners, which is no surprise. They continued in that business in the US and consequently there were a lot of alcoholics on my paternal side of the family. I have devoured all the Irish novels I can find, especially the recent ones by the brothers whose name I can’t remember. McCord or McCort, something like that. Memory is slipping. Thanks so much for this beautiful blog.

Great site! The drinkers may be of a more recent vintage though. That type of pint glass seems to have been introduced in the 1970s, but I’ll check it out again.
Thanks for the comment. I have another photo of the man in the middle which is dated 1978 and he looks to be in his 50s. I’ll check with my costume historian friend re: the collars and hairstyles. It might be as late as the 1960s but I don’t really get a 1970s feel from the photo. Let me know what you find out?
