This amateur print shows the distinctive Martello tower and shoreline at Donabate, North County Dublin. The second photograph shows a wagon-lit or railway sleeping carriage on the strand. 

The process looks quite like a Van Dyke print, however, the brownish hue may also be the result of toning. The Library of Congress provides a comprehensive guide to historic photographic processes as does the wonderful alternative photography website. These prints come from a album owned by the Foley family from Clontarf and the other images date from between 1890 and 1920. Even though these prints are full of flaws and smudges I love the brooding sky and eery mood.
